Christian Brewer Quartet Review
MAP Studio Café 19th of April 2012
Christian Brewer, composer playing alto sax, Jim Mullen on guitar, double bass played by Matt Ridley and Troy Miller on drums.
They start slowly with a grainy sound, the finely tuned guitar playing constant with the staccato choppy drumming and the pitch perfect tone of the double bass, creating a freshness and clarity of individual accomplishment the call goes out and the sax replies. All the instruments creating their own tangential rythmn with harmony, this is a sound that has resonance letting the audience free to imagine.
Relaxing into each other’s personal style they highlight music analogous with a worldly vision, note perfect and on time the heritage of the composition speaking a collective language, by way of perfect synergies. And when the pleasure of the sax intervenes almost nuisance like, its growing appeal and timbre became a delight. Each instrument constantly drawing on its own influence, with an emphasis and affection for `’Theolinus Monk” the sound homogenizes with a fluidity and the genius of the quartet is brought home with a certain clarification of authenticity and brevity.
A new broad minded approach with an old grandeur reproduced with feeling and emotion lead to an Orchestrated planetary sensitivity, as they end in flourishes of galactic proportion, they start with earthly grace and a slow build up by degrees each tune revealing. The playing overall displayed a unique sense of truth in musical shape and form the, swirling and the flowing groove constantly surprising and maintaining the integrity. Each ebbing and flowing showing the way and the Sax on cue by dexterous flexibility, constant and at ease, yet able to give his fellow musicians the space to experiment. The experience of which is unparralled an incredible night, illuminating. The future of British Jazz is Here and Now.
Christian Brewer recorded his first album in 2006 “Introducing Christian brewer followed by the critically acclaimed “Seesaw”. And more recently has worked and recorded with renowned composer and big band enthusiast John Warren.
