Deborah Carew - Vocals, Ben McDonnell - guitar, Henry Gilbert - Double bass, Peter Adam Hill - drums
London-based vocalist started her training at the Weekend Arts College, under the tuition of Rachel Bennett (Raie), and Julie Dexter. Deborah started to collaborate with some of London’s top session musicians on the London jam scene, such as Sam Beste, Dave Preston, Josh Morrison. Alongside this, attending regularly at the spoken word and open mic night, Urban Griots.
Deborah then went on to learn more about arranging and directing an ensemble, and performance, attending a PACE course at Goldsmiths. Then progressed onto completing a degree at Middlesex University – BA Honours in Jazz in 2010. There, she gained more in-depth knowledge about Jazz harmony and theory, performance repertoire, producing arrangements and compositions, which then lead on to form her first quintet where she had a monthly residency at Charlie Wrights Jazz Bar in Hoxton, London. The quintet comprised of Ed Riches (guitar), Henry Gilbert (double bass), Chris Packham (drums), and Al Scott (keyboard/piano).
“…..Deborah Carew possesses a voice that makes me want to hear the standards anew! Her deep, sweet tones ring true, somewhere between Cassandra Wilson and Ella – precision pitch, the timing of a master drummer and superb mutual respect on stage with her outstanding trio! Her pursuit of Jazz demonstrates intelligence and deep love of the form – no Jack of all Trades is Deborah! Dont miss!”
Rachel Bennett, Raie (Vocal teacher, Diploma tutor at WAC, Vocal Lecturer at Goldsmiths College)
“A welcome addition to the London Jazz scene is singer Deborah Carew. Her sweet and delicate vocals are delightful. Her style is relaxed with lovely jazz phrasing which communicates the lyrics in a very natural and honest way.”
Trudy Kerr, Jazz vocalist
